Staying Well Hydrated
Hydration is the process of replacing the water your body loses through breathing, sweating, urination, and digestion. Water is the main fluid the body needs, and even mild dehydration can affect energy, concentration, digestion, and temperature control.
Try to drink regularly throughout the day, and increase your fluids when it is hot, when you exercise, or when you are unwell.
1. Water and Electrolytes
Water should be the default choice for everyday hydration because it is healthy, inexpensive, and effective. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium help regulate fluid balance, muscle contraction, and nerve function — so they become more important when the body is losing a lot of fluid through heavy sweat, diarrhoea, vomiting, or prolonged exercise.
For most healthy people doing normal daily activities, plain water plus a balanced diet is usually enough.
2. Hydration Needs by Age
Hydration needs change with age, activity, and body size:
Children
Children need regular fluid intake throughout the day to support growth and active play.
Teens
Teens often need more fluid than adults because of growth spurts, sports, and higher activity levels.
Adults
Adults usually need steady water intake spread across the day rather than large amounts in one go.
Older Adults
Older adults should drink even when they do not feel thirsty, because thirst cues weaken with age.
3. Hydrating Foods
Many foods contribute to hydration because they contain a lot of water. Fruits and vegetables are especially useful because they add fluids plus vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Good examples include:
