Digital Detox for Better Night Sleep

Digital detox at night simply means giving your brain and body a break from screens so your natural sleep hormones can rise and you can fall into deeper, more restorative sleep.

1. Digital Sunset: Switching Off Screens Before Bed

Switch Off 30–90 Minutes Before Bed

Aim to switch off all screens (phone, laptop, TV, tablet) 30–90 minutes before your ideal bedtime. Even 30 minutes helps, but a longer window has a stronger effect on sleep quality.

Blue Light Delays Your Body Clock

Blue light from screens can delay your internal body clock, tricking the brain into "daytime mode" and making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Calming Analogue Activities

Use this wind-down window for calming, analogue activities: reading a physical book, gentle stretching, breathwork, journaling, a warm bath, or herbal tea.

2. Tech-Free Sleep Sanctuary: Creating a Healing Bedroom

Keep Devices Out of the Bedroom

Keep phones, tablets, TVs, and laptops out of the bedroom where possible. Devices in the bedroom are linked with shorter and lighter sleep.

Charge Devices Outside the Room

Charge devices outside the room and use a simple alarm clock to remove the "just one more scroll" temptation and late-night notifications.

A Holistic Healing Space

Make the bedroom a holistic healing space: cool, dark, and quiet, with soothing practices like meditation, gratitude journaling, soft music, or aromatherapy instead of screens.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

— Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)

The Psalmist asks God to turn his eyes away from worthless things and give him life in God's ways — a powerful picture of looking away from endless digital distraction (Psalm 119:37). Paul encourages us not to be anxious but to bring everything to God in prayer; God's peace then guards our hearts and minds, calming nighttime worry (Philippians 4:6–7).

By creating a digital sunset and a tech-free sleep sanctuary, you honour the rhythms of rest that God designed for your body and mind. Let go of the screen, pick up His peace, and welcome the deep, restorative sleep He intends for you.
